Reconstructing a Medieval Library Today: the Case of Saint-Bertin

The IRHT, the Bibliothèque d'Agglomération de Saint-Omer and Biblissima will propose a summer course in Saint-Omer, from Tuesday 25th to Saturday 29th August, which will introduce the participants to the Saint-Bertin Abbey Library and its history.

At the end of the course, participants will receive a certificate of participation which may count as part of their Master or doctoral studies (2015-2016 academic year).

Programme

Tuesday, 25th August 2015 – History of Medieval Libraries

  • 9:00-9:30 – Welcome
  • 9:30-12:30 – Anne-Marie Turcan-Verkerk, Collections of Books, from the 5th to 15th Century
  • 14:00-16:00 – Dominique Stutzmann, "Saint-Bertin, Cultural Centre from the 7th to 18th Century: Assembling, Preserving, Diffusing and Using Knowledge", a Presentation of the Project
  • 16:00-17:30 – Poster Session (each participant will prepare and present a poster on their current or future research)

Wednesday, 26th August 2015 – Texts and their History

  • 9:00-12:30 – Jean-Charles Bédague, Saint-Bertin Abbey and the Saint-Omer Collegiate Cathedral. Behind the Manuscripts: Places, Contexts, People – Frédéric Tixier, From Text to Decor: an History of the Saint-Bertin Abbey Scriptorium in the 12th and 13th Centuries
  • 13:30-15:15 – Remy Cordonnier, Dominique Stutzmann, Describing and Identifying Texts
  • 15:30-17:00 – Practical Session: Cataloguing Medieval Manuscripts

Thursday, 27th August 2015 – Old Library Inventories

  • 13:30-17:00 – Practical Session: Reading, Understanding and Editing Old Inventories

Friday 28th August 2015 – Using Digital Tools to Reconstruct an Historical Collection

  • 9:00-12:30 – Laura Lebarbey, Reconstructing and Studying an Historical Collection, beyond the Multiplicity of Databases and Formats (EAD, TEI)
  • 13:30-17:00 – Practical Session: Describing Manuscripts in TEI and Linking Data Online

Saturday 29th August 2015 – Diplomatic Manuscripts
